Climax Mine, in Area 15 of the Nevada Test Site.

The Spent Fuel Test - Climax was conducted 1,400 feet beneath the surface of the PUS form 1980 to 1983 to evaluate the effects of storing spent reactor fuel in a granite formation. Eleven canisterized spent fuel elements were lowered into steel-lined holes in the tunnel floor, and the holes were capped with five-thousand-pound concrete plugs. When the spent fuel elements were in place, readings on the top of the plugs were below natural radiation readings from the granite. Parallel tunnels with electric heaters simulated the heat from radiation decay that normally would occur in a large-scale repository. The test showed granite has the thermal and shielding properties necessary for a repository. In 1983, the canisters were removed and returned to the E—MAD Building.
